I have always hated celebrations. I felt too much tension and pressure, especially if the focus was on me. I dreaded celebrating my birthday with my friends and actually prefer if they would just ignore the whole day as it is. You can tell that I had a complicated relationship with celebrations. That was until I went to one specific party.
“No joke – not too long ago I used to hide on my birthday, so nobody would find me.”
I never understood the mechanics behind a party. Perhaps I had only gone to bad parties until then. I didn’t know how to enjoy parties and celebrations simply because I didn’t handle them correctly. No joke – not too long ago I used to hide on birthday, so nobody would find me.
It has been about two years ago that I was invited to my friend’s party. She was celebrating her birthday as well as the move into a new house. It just seemed like another standard reason to throw a party – important enough for me not to make an excuse. Remember, I really dreaded parties like that. However, she pulled it off – for me.
“Her being an experienced party-monster, she knew about all the details that can ruin your evening.”
Beforehand the party seemed to have all the factors I hated – people I didn’t know but had to talk to, music one is supposed to dance to and plenty of awkward moments when you don’t know what to do. But here is the catch – I actually enjoyed. At the time I didn’t realise immediately, but my friend had somewhat engineered her celebration. Her being an experienced party-monster, she knew about all the details that can ruin your evening.
From the moment I walked into her new shinny apartment, I was taken and guided throughout the night. For some reason there was always the right person to talk to, there were plenty of different drinks and canapés that kept me either busy eating or talking about it. The trick with buffet and canapés is that one can eat whenever you want. There is stiff setup around a table – at which I would be forced to talk to the person next to me.
The drinks really got me talking – not just because of the alcohol. My friend got someone to make cocktails all night, but not just any cocktails. They were all cocktails from films and literature. Little cocktail menus would tell you what you were drinking and who had drunk it in what film or book. I had White Russian from The Big Lebowski, James Bond’s Vesper Martini, Mint Juleps from The Great Gatsby and more. Films and books in combination with drinks and food even got me on fire.
You want to host your parties, but need a little with canapés and cocktails? Clubvivre is ready to help – no matter if dinner, BBQ, buffet or canapés.
Every celebration I went to before that had always a centre point – if you didn’t like it then you usually weren’t enjoying the evening. However, my friend’s party was rather a celebration of everyone who was there, rather than just herself. Guess what, I actually started hosting my own celebrations since.
