When I heard about the combination of butter and sushi, I thought that Western sushi fusion creations have gone too far. But guess what: it isn’t the latest foodie trend from L.A., but from Osaka, Japan itself. It is perhaps the most unlikely combination of food to succeed in Japan. But then again – are we still surprised by trends coming from the island. Furthermore, until now it is just a ‘thing’ in Japan. Whether or not it will catch on is questionable.
If you are into sushi, then you might know that good quality uni, which is sea urchin, is extremely creamy. One Japanese sushi chain has recently stepped up the sushi game and created possibly the creamiest piece of sushi there is. Adding a slice of butter to the sushi makes it all very rich.
Grilled eel and butter sushi is apparently becoming one of the local favourites – melting together in one’s mouth. If you love Japanese food, you probably love Japanese fusion food as well.
