Because who wouldn’t want help in the form of travel tips when travelling abroad to a new, exciting and unknown place? Not only on where to go, but most importantly where and what to eat. Let’s say we all agree that travel and food go hand in hand, like two peas in a pod.
With all this diversity, you may think, why food travel?
Although you can get traditional Italian food in Singapore, having that same dish in Italy has an entire new feel and meaning to it. Even its taste will be unique. Sometimes better and sometimes not living up to what you are used to or expect. We are all accustomed to certain flavours from our home town, making new flavours exciting or unwelcome to our taste buds.
But travel, be it for the food alone or just to experience the world around us, always always includes food. We all have to eat! And why not indulge in each country’s specialities while doing so? In this case, where food travel is one of the best vacations – for me, travel tips are of utmost importance to enjoy local and good food.
Why do I say this?
Let’s look at it this way…. How many times a day do we eat?
If you are anything like me, at least 6 small meals a day.
And with that we need to drink. Correct? Wine, coffee, juices, milkshakes, cocktails…
Wherever you may travel, you will be bound to eat and drink, be it once a day or more.
This would fall under the category food travel.
And anything that falls under this category, needs travel tips to accompany it. Because, oh you can go so wrong if you are clueless, but can go so tastefully right if you are in the know. That’s exactly what I am about to do. I keep you in the know, whether you like it or not. Once you know, you can’t un-know!
Yes of course, water is the best way to quench your thirst. Water is water, no matter where you are.
Travel Tip No 1.
No! Water is water, Yes, but the taste and quality varies hugely from place to place. Always make sure you read up on each city’s tap water information beforehand. To be safe, just drink bottled water. This goes for the ice too. Although a cocktail, fruit juice or wine spritzer may not be made from local water in it, the ice is.
Many of us may think, that the only way to best experience the flavours of the country you are in, is to go to a high end restaurant with the best chefs in town. Yes, maybe in some places, but not all. Morocco being an example of exactly the opposite.
Similarly to food in Singapore, one will find good food in the street. In the Moroccan capital Marrakech one can explore Jemaa el-Fnaa, which is one of the biggest squares in all of Africa. More than hundred different stalls with delicious local food are waiting to be explored. Having been around for years, these stalls cook with authentic flavours and recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. One could call it Hawker food Moroccan-style. These hawkers food stalls and their food surpass fine dining in every way.
Because everything is prepared there and then, right in front of you, you can be picky and ask for what u want, without anyone getting offended. If you don’t like coriander, simply ask to not have it as a part of your meal. Street food is therefore the way to go.
Food Travel Ideas:
Learn the language. I don’t mean, be able to speak each language of every country you visit, but know the most useful words. This will allow you to communicate with the locals, asking for general travel tips or food travel tips. Already a few words can make all the difference. Locals often appreciate if you show the interest and at least try. It happened often to me that I actually was offered something special that wasn’t on the menu – simply because it try to speak a few words in the local language.
This brings us already to the next of the travel tips.
Travel Tip No. 4
Ask, watch and eat where the locals eat. Be it a quick meal to eat as you explore, or an evening out of fine dining, they know where to find authentically good food at a reasonable price. In search of this, they may even be friendly enough, inviting you into their homes for a meal.
Listen to your instincts, your tummy and nose. If it makes your stomach turn, or doesn’t smell pleasant, no matter how sought after it is, don’t eat it. Each country has its delicacy, and although it can’t kill you to try it once, if it doesn’t sit right with you or your tummy, it’s not worth ruining your holiday even for a few hours to a few days.
The general food travel tips, as mentioned above, are helpful whichever place you may visit this time. But each country and even city or village, has an overflow of personal and general travel tips. Travelling is important for our minds, body, soul! And food, within this travel indeed contributes to the effects on your body, mind and soul! Book your adventure abroad, right away!
