Welcome to the making of the Black & Gold dinner, created exclusively for American Express Premium Card members in April 2015.
One idea to start with
The Black & Gold dinner was based on the idea of a visual sensation. We wanted to create a feeling that the door you have just walked through brings you to a magical postcard-like space full of surprises that you won’t even anticipate – a feast for the eyes quite literally. We envisioned it to be bold, passionate and beautiful.
Venue and Menu
We’ve chosen the Powder Room of The Black Swan to become our canvas for the design experience. The room is normally filled with high cocktail tables and couches, so we decided to remove them and bring in a different set of furniture more suitable for the dinner.
It was our pleasure to work with Chef Benjamin Tan, the executive chef of Lo & Behold group, who also heads The Black Swan. Chef Benjamin suggested a creative menu to satisfy the most sophisticated guests, but not to overpower the highlight of the evening – the most special champagne.
The shining stars of Black & Gold were the drinks – Comte De Mazeray Gold Champagne (Brut & Rose) and Gold Cognac, both containing 24k gold flakes. Jean-Christophe Rousseau, who is the creator of the world’s only pure gold champagne, flew to Singapore specially for the evening. Throughout the dinner he was entertaining guests with his stories of gold craftsmanship.
The starter came with edible flowers and a juicy steak was an all-time favourite main. The sweet culinary finish came in an extravagant form. Jean-Christophe Rousseau from Comte de Mazeray Gold Emotion personally decorated every guest’s dessert with pure 24k gold flakes dispensed from a custom-made pepper mill.
To walk away from an association with a worn-out theme of Great Gatsby parties, we mixed the Art Deco atmosphere of the venue with Victorian and contemporary design elements. This eclectic approach created a melting pot of charm.
Tiffany golden chairs in Victorian grace (popular choice from Events Partner) and a black tablecloth will remind you of the theme all night. Golden plates combined with black linen presented golden skulls for each guest and received rave reviews.
Two antique oil paintings with massive Victorian golden frames were turned into canapé platters. Edible mushroom cigars were placed in crystal Art Deco ashtrays to create small surprises for the guests.
Although the table might be the main space of any dinner, one shouldn’t forget the surrounding. The Black & Gold atmosphere was extended to a magic garden with a hanging floral installation. Large tropical leaves sprayed with golden paint and plenty of roses brought even more colour into the room. 120 candles created a magical atmosphere, while a mix of various transparent vases highlighted the eclectic décor style of the evening. Even everyday objects, such as small mirrors, can make the difference reflecting light and charm.
We love bringing art to our dinners and invited ArtBlue art studio on board, introducing five stunning oil paintings by Phuong Quoc Tri, a romantic artist from Vietnam.
Entertainment during the Dinner Party
Besides playing smooth jazz in the background, the dinner experience engaged a live art illustrator to create a Black & Gold artwork throughout the evening, bringing together Singapore and Paris. Each guest’s individual cartoon portrait was incorporated into the drawing, being presented as a gift to each guest as a golden memory. If the event isn’t already memorable enough, one should give the guests something to take with. Art Deco poster designs with the attached cartoon and a golden wax stamp surely won’t let anyone forget about it.
Creating a signature experience such as the Black & Gold dinner is about the attention to the details and a creative approach. Make your guests feel welcome and open up their senses – not only culinary, but also visually. Don’t forget, you eat with your eyes (first)!
